Wireless dog fences – what you need to know

The wireless dog fence is a great solution for keeping your dog in your yard and is easy to install. As the name suggests, there are no cables to bury and these systems can be installed and running in a matter of hours. Because these systems are wireless, they’re also portable, which can be a plus if you’re traveling with your dog or have a vacation home; you can take your fence with you. These pet restraint systems consist of a transmitter and a receiver. Radio signals from the transmitter activate your pet’s receiver collar when it approaches a boundary. Collars can provide audible, vibrating, or static alerts, or various combinations, to correct your dog and keep him within the limits you set.

The current wireless dog fence uses radio signals to trigger the receiver collar to correct your dog and is not suitable for all situations. If your property has dense trees in the area where you want to keep your dog, or if you want to install the transmitter in a log cabin, these systems will not work. If your home or facility has metal siding or a metal roof, or if there are metal buildings in the area where you want to keep your dog, these systems will not work. Radio signals are direct line of sight; to determine if a wireless dog fence is a good option, stand where you intend to mount the transmitter and while looking out in all directions, note any of the obstacles mentioned above in your line of sight. If there are no obstacles in your line of sight, a wireless dog fence is a good option for you.

The majority of instant wireless dog fences available today produce a circular coverage pattern. The size of the protection zone is adjusted by the transmitter, and some systems allow you to add or combine transmitters to increase the coverage area. When sizing the template, remember that it is a circle and will need to be adjusted to the smallest area that needs to be covered. For example, the front of your home is close to a road and you have a large backyard. The size of the protection zone will be limited by the distance from the transmitter to the safe distance you want from the road in front of the house. In this example, only part of the backyard would be permissible for your dog.

The wireless dog fence is a good solution to keep your dogs in. If you take the time to make sure your environment is clear of obstructions and can mount the transmitter in a suitable location to provide the desired boundary coverage, you can be sure your dogs will be safe and happy too.
