Understanding the basics of latex allergy

Individuals who have an allergic reaction to products that are made from latex-based materials have what is known as a “latex allergy.” Latex in its natural form is a liquid that is produced from rubber trees that are tropical.

The liquid is then processed and used in the production of many common products including rubber gloves, elastic bands, balloons, condoms, rubber toys, bandages, duct tape and many other items found in households and businesses around the world.

Allergic reactions to latex products are caused by the protein found in the rubber and can range from mild to severe. With a mild allergic reaction to latex, the individual may experience symptoms that are very closely related to those of hay fever or seasonal allergies and include itchy watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing.

It is also common for people who are allergic to latex to develop a rash or hives. A severe reaction to a latex product can lead to anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal, and these symptoms can include difficulty breathing, vomiting, a slow or rapid pulse, and loss of consciousness.

Individuals most prone to latex allergies are those who work in the healthcare and rubber industries. Individuals who have other types of allergies, such as seasonal allergies and food allergies, are also more likely to develop a latex allergy.

The best thing to do if you find you have a latex allergy is to remove all latex products from your environment. There are many substitutes on the market today that do not contain latex and will allow you to replace all the necessary elements.

It is also essential to avoid inhaling dusts such as those commonly found in latex gloves as they contain latex particles which can also cause a severe allergic reaction. It is also essential to wear some form of medical identification bracelet or necklace in case of an emergency so that medical professionals are aware of your latex allergy.
