Things to do before traveling with your shih tzu
The Shitzu’s love of travel and well-behaved Shitzu make a wonderful representative of the breed. Whether you’re on a long trip or a short excursion, the company and companionship of your Shih Tzu can make the trip even more fun.
Here are a few things you can do to make traveling for you and your Shih Tzu much more comfortable and less stressful:
1). Make sure your shih tzu is trained to his or her travel kennel and feels comfortable and secure inside it. This training starts at an early age by using the travel crate daily as a security hideout and occasionally placing morsels of food inside. When it’s time to travel, your shih tzu will feel right at home in his travel kennel and won’t worry or fuss.
2). Get a health certificate for travel. Make sure your shih tzu is in excellent health and can make the trip. It would also be wise to ask your vet to do a physical exam and check that all required vaccinations are up to date. You should also ask about any prescribed medications you may need for the trip.
3). Make sure you have all the things you will need during the trip, including things in case of illness or an emergency. Here is a list of things to make sure you have before your trip:
– Tourist kennel
– Collar with ID tag and leash
– Dishes, food and bottled water
– Medicines
– First aid kit
– Toys and mats
– Grooming supplies
– Spatula, plastic bags and paper towels
– Veterinary documentation, photo identification, microchip number and contact numbers
4). Make reservations ahead of time. Be sure to check with hotels or campgrounds to make sure pets are allowed. You should also reserve a seat for a dog with the airlines if air travel is part of your travel plans.
Traveling can be fun, but all too often things can go wrong. That’s why it’s very important to make sure you take every precaution to protect yourself and your Shih Tzu. Your dog will love your vigilance.
