Dog daycare programs benefit dog owners who have busy lives and are unable to socialize and exercise their dogs. Owners benefit from a guilt-free day of work or play and can come home to a calm, relaxed pet. Dog day care provides the best of both worlds for both dogs and owners.
Starting in California in 1987, dog daycares have spread to every small town in America. Started by dog enthusiasts, the owners apply the same principles of running any business combined with their love of dogs to create the ultimate day care business.
An article in the online magazine VetCentric.com describes the benefits of dog day care as follows:
“The guiding principle behind dog day care is simple – provide a safe and healthy environment with plenty of interaction, both with other dogs and people. Dogs can participate in group play, chew on a favorite toy, hang out with people in the office, or just lounge on the couch and watch TV. The point is, they’re not home alone.”
Other benefits of dog daycare include a social environment where dogs can play together, plenty of activity, excellent release for high-energy dogs, year-round operation of the daycare (except major holidays), attention from trained staff, and peace of mind for the working owner.
Dog daycares are mostly held in large, open spaces that have some sort of separation system for both size and temperament. Most dog day care centers also have an outdoor exercise area. Some daycares provide furniture for dogs to climb on, agility equipment and lots of toys.
Some things to consider when looking for a dog day care are the professionalism of the staff. Make sure they love dogs, know a lot about dog behavior, and interact with those at doggy day care every day. Also consider having space and “time-out” areas for dogs that don’t get along. Make sure your dog will be comfortable with air conditioning, heat and bedding. Also check the availability and general rules for dog day care.
