The Great Dane

The Great Dane

Dubbed the “Apollo of dogs,” the Great Dane exudes the perfect balance of strength and elegance. These healthy dogs are the tallest of all dogs. Despite its appearance, the Great Dane is actually a very gentle giant. They are extremely alert animals, whose only fault is shyness or excessive nervousness. They are quick friendly and responsive to the people around them and therefore make great pets.

The origins of the Great Dane are unclear, but can be seen on some Greek coins from 36 BC. Early Great Danes were also in Germanic Gaul in 407 AD, as well as in Italy and Spain. In Germany they were crossed with Irish Hounds to make the bold big dogs we know today.

Interestingly, although it is called a Great Dane, the breed has nothing to do with Denmark. Although Great Danes do not live as long as smaller breeds, they are not as prone to disease. They can also live well in urban environments as long as they are exercised frequently. This gentle giant is best kept inside rather than outside or in a kennel, and he has many talents, including tracking and being an excellent guard dog. Overall, this majestic dog is a great addition to any family.
