The Cairn Terrier – the choice of famous pet owners

When most people think of a Cairn Terrier, the first image that comes to mind is Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Released in the late 1930s, The Wizard of Oz was single-handedly responsible for making Judy Garland famous with her portrayal of the main character, Dorothy. Judy Garland wasn’t the only one to gain instant fame from the film, however.

In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s sidekick was a little dog named Toto, played by a Cairn terrier named Terry. Terry’s handler, Carl Spitz, was one of the most famous dog trainers in Hollywood, an achievement due in large part to the work of his adorable little Cairn Terrier in the film. Carl Spitz and Terry worked together on over a dozen films after The Wizard of Oz.

Judy Garland and Terry the terrier are said to have had a very affectionate working relationship and developed a very strong bond during the filming of the film, which most likely led to Garland owning a Cairn Terrier afterwards. Garland’s daughter, as many know, is Liza Minnelli, who is also a very famous Cairn Terrier owner. Minnelli is known for her love and care for dogs, but especially for this breed, an affection she undoubtedly acquired through her mother.

Prince Edward and his wife Wallis Simpson, known for their royalty and time in the public eye, are also known for their ownership of Cairn Terriers. As pets of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, their pets certainly got the royal treatment! Meals for Edward and Simpson’s Cairn Terriers were prepared by chefs specially trained to make food for the dogs, and served privately in the Duke and Duchess’ rooms from silver bowls, as if the dogs themselves were royalty. It is said that the dogs were even spoon-fed by their owners!

Edward and Simpson have owned a number of Cairn Terriers over the years, the first being Slipper, a multicolored gray Cairn who had so much trouble breaking in that he ended up being nicknamed Mr. Lou. After Mister Loo came a cream female named Pookie, a gray tabby similar to Mister Loo named Detto, and a cream female named Prisie. After several generations of Cairn Terrier ownership, however, the Duke and Duchess eventually began keeping pugs as their pets.

The most famous Cairn Terrier breeders are Brenda and Ron Birch. After three decades of careful and selective breeding practices, the Birches have made quite a name for themselves, producing champion after champion in their litters. Their dogs are so famous that their bloodline has its own name: Kinkim. Many people believe that their success with these dogs is the result of the couple’s heavy interaction with them. Although many breeders will hire handlers and groomers, the Birches are known for showing and training their dogs themselves. Their most amazing Cairn Terrier, the champion Kinkim Ludvik, was awarded over 25 certificates in various competitions. What makes for a successful puppy?
