Stop stress! Three simple yoga exercises to release tension and stress at work

Are you stressed? Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of paperwork and projects you have to complete at work?

Constant exposure to stress creates excess tension in your body. Long-term exposure can have a detrimental effect on your emotional and mental health.

To counteract the negative effects of workplace stress, such as sore lower back muscles, tense shoulders, headaches or tired eyes, have you considered practicing yoga?

Many of the students I teach yoga to say that yoga gives them “inner strength”, “a sense of balance and inner peace”. This helps them stay focused at work and gives them easy tools and techniques to deal with stressful situations in a calm and more positive way.

To reduce stress and tension at work, practice the following easy-to-do yoga exercises that you can do in your chair, at your desk.

You’ll feel lighter, more relaxed, and more in control of the work you need to do.

Three simple yoga exercises to do at your desk to release stress and tension

Before starting these simple yoga exercises, sit comfortably in your chair. The feet are flat on the floor, the arms hang freely at the sides. Smile and relax your shoulders. Lengthen your spine and breathe slowly and deeply in and out through your nose.

As with all yoga practices, please be respectful and patient with your body.

1. Twisting the body in a sitting position Rest your hands on your shoulders and slightly twist your body to the side. Twist gently 3-5 times in each direction. Make sure to twist from the base of the spine and keep your back straight throughout the stretch.

2. Stretching the arms overhead Inhale and slowly stretch your arms in the air overhead. Exhale slowly and arch your back slightly. Inhale and as you exhale slowly return your hands to your hips. Repeat 3-5 times.

3. Sitting Cat Stretch Make sure you have room in front of you. Sitting in your chair, lean forward and hold your ankles or shins. Arch your back like a cat, relax and repeat 3-5 times

Practice these simple yoga exercises regularly throughout your workday. They will help you cope better with stress and tension at work. With regular practice, you’ll feel calmer, brighter, and better able to focus on your work.
