Spiders would make great pets for space colonists
People like to have pets, but in a space colony there will be a limited supply of food and the importance of recycling everything. This means there won’t be much left to have a pet of another species in a space colony. Therefore, what types of pets can you have? Having plants as pets can work, but sometimes that’s not enough for humans.
Small mammals and rodents might work, but that too might be problematic, and we don’t know how well they’ll do in space. They might do better than humans and reproduce well, but then they would eat the colonists out of house and home. Therefore, taking cats and dogs into space may not make sense either – what about ferrets, mice or other small creatures; hard to say.
NASA took spiders into space and put them in a zero-gravity environment and they did great, immediately creating a web and waiting for the insects to fly over to catch them. There weren’t any insects to catch, but they went ahead and built their home and joined their genetic blueprint. Spiders are fun to watch and interesting, so they can make great pets for space colonists.
Yes, some space colonists might be afraid of spiders, but if non-poisonous spiders are used, it won’t be so bad and they might get used to it. It seems that people need pets for some reason, something to care for, and maybe it’s part of their genetic component and psychological predisposition to raise a family that causes this in the human psyche.
If we deny this and do not allow pets in our space colonies, we may find that some of the humans and colonists become depressed, upset, bored, and this may affect them in a negative way. Now, I’m not sure if spiders will make the greatest pets for Space Colonists, but it’s an idea to throw out there and think about. There will be pros and cons to taking any species into space or living on another planet—much like the challenges humans will face.
