Silly String – Play Tag like you’ve never played it before
At a family gathering a few years ago, my sister introduced us to a new game of tag called “Everybody’s It.” You start the game with all ‘it’ and the only way to get someone out is to tap them on the back. If tagged, they must immediately sit where they were tagged, and they are out for the duration of that particular round. The challenge, of course, is to get people on your back and at the same time watch your own back. Pretty exciting. Games end quickly so everyone can start over. So why all this information when you really want to buy some stupid string? Well, think about it… after you’ve played a few times with just spraying the weird launch foam around, then what are you going to do? The silly string is one of those inventions, like silly putty, that we just like and want to play with.
Now reflect on the above information and consider the possibilities of incorporating a silly string into a good game of “Everybody’s It”. This can be played with both young and old. Some suggestions to get your game going.
Everyone will need their own can. Explain the rules of the game to the players, but tell them that instead of slapping people on the back to get them out, they have to spray people on the back. No physical contact is allowed. There are a few different ways to do it. If you want a long-term game involving several rounds, then there will be two “out” options. First, if someone gets splashed on the back, they immediately sit down and wait for the next round. The second “out” is when they run out of silly string. It really ups the ante when you can be a great player but shoot too much. The last player
standing with a string still in its box is the winner.
Establish boundaries. This is crucial because when there are only two people left in a round, chasing them down the middle of the block is not a good option, nor is it fun for those waiting to start the next round because it takes too long. The fun in this game is how quickly anyone can come back and the winner can be anyone who has an accurate shot and is also fast enough to avoid splashing.
So grab some string and let the games begin.
