Puppy Training – When is the right age to start Shih Tzu puppy training?
Shih Tzu puppies are one of the most loyal and loving companions. From birth, they try to please you. However, if not trained, they can be hyperactive and destructive. If you don’t know when to train these puppies, you could have a tornado of fur swirling through your home, destroying everything in its path. Early training of a Shih Tzu is a good idea and quite simple:
- The best time to start training a Shih Tzu puppy is between 8 and 10 weeks. Since you technically shouldn’t separate the puppy from the mother before this point, it’s a good idea to start immediately when you bring your Shih Tzu puppy home.
- Start by taking your puppy to a designated spot in your yard after times such as feedings, long naps, waking up in the morning, and when your puppy is left alone for extended periods of time.
- Puppies at this age do not understand commands; this takes time. At about 8 weeks, start by confining the puppy to a 5-by-5-foot square in your yard. Point your finger at the spot and repeat a phrase that the puppy can remember. Be consistent and use this location, phrase, and finger pointing. It is best to do this right after a meal to ensure elimination.
- Praise the puppy by holding and petting it when they successfully eliminate in their place. After a while you can start giving them treats.
- At 8-10 weeks of age, it is not a good idea to punish the puppy for indoor accidents. They have no idea that this is unacceptable, so it would be completely pointless to punish them.
