Pet Allergies – Dogs and Cats Constantly Itching and Scratching?

Is your dog or cat constantly itching and scratching? Do you see scaly skin or pet dander lying around the bedding and in the house? Does it have an unpleasant smell? Does your pet have thinning hair or leave hair on the floor and carpet? Is your dog constantly licking its paws?

Your dog or cat has allergies. I would also add sneezing to the list of issues. My dog sneezed.

It doesn’t matter what state you live in, as each state produces irritants that will cause allergy symptoms in our pets. Allergy triggers can be from soil, plants and grasses, air, food and water.

If you can control or eliminate the causes of allergies from these sources, your pets will bless you.

Suggestions for allergy relief:

Change the types of foods and record how your pet reacts until you resolve the food allergy. Food allergies can be caused by wheat, rice, corn, additives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, by-products, and more.

Bathe your pet two or three times a week with colloidal oatmeal and lukewarm water to relieve itchy skin. I have always been told not to bathe a dog too often due to the need for oils in their skin and coat. An exception will have to be made to bring relief to your pet.

There are topical anti-itch or other allergy products that can be purchased over the counter, or allergy medications purchased from your veterinarian. Sometimes allergy shots may be needed. But again, pay attention to pet reactions and check for side effects. You will need to weigh the choice of treatment against the negative side effects.

Supplements can be mixed with their food. Once again, note the changes. For example, fish oil is one of the natural recommendations; however, I found that my dog, Brandy, was allergic to fish oil. I was recommended to try flaxseed. I’ll give Brandy some flaxseed and note the results.

Groom your pet. Brush or comb their coat. Pet your dog or cat to soothe their upset feelings.

After seeing how natural foods and natural treatments helped my dog manage his skin and respiratory allergy conditions, I am all for this type of pet care. If you have allergy issues with your pets and want to cut down on vet bills, you may want to consider the natural route to better and less expensive pet care.
