Orange County Moves to ‘High’ Level of COVID-19 Transmission as Cases, Hospitalizations Increase
SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) — Orange County has again climbed to a “high” level of COVID-19 transmission amid a surge in cases and hospitalizations.
dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county’s health officer, says the jump to a higher level of community outreach is expected as more people socialize and gather for the holidays.
He suggests getting tested for COVID before going to a family event or party.
“Consider getting tested before you go to a holiday gathering because you could indeed have COVID, and if you do, you’ll need to stay home,” Chinsio-Kwong said.
He says if you think you’ve been exposed to the virus, you should get tested more than once before the holidays.
An increase in COVID cases is expected by the first week of January.
Orange County Health Care Agency officials also encouraged residents to learn about flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. Officials specifically encouraged vaccinated residents to get a new bivalent booster shot designed to combat the omicron strain.
Health officials also advise citizens to wash their hands frequently and wear a mask in crowded places to stay safe.
Chinsio-Kwong says other diseases are also straining resources.
“Hospitals are still affected by influenza and RSV,” Chinsio-Kwong said. “Even though we’re seeing a decline in RSV rates, children who still go to the hospital, and even some adults who go to the hospital, still have severe symptoms.”
