A bowl of soothing porridge or congee brought me back to childhood memories as I remember my dog enjoying eating homemade porridge. And I’ll tell you why.
I used to have this dog who is a crossbreed. I had the dog when I was about 13 years old. Our family friend advised us that to make the dog’s coat look shiny and thick, we should give it natural black “gula melaka” (a type of traditional palm sugar in Malaysia) mixed with porridge. This really makes his fur thick and shiny black. Even few of my neighbors asked us what special food we gave him to make him look so good and healthy.
Ancient Chinese food – porridge
Chinese porridge (or aka mess) is a soup or liquid version of cooked rice. Once upon a time, the poor in China made porridge to prolong the household’s consumption of rice grains; as it uses a much smaller amount of rice for each meal. However, due to its soft texture, it is also a traditional Chinese baby food. Since it is easily digestible and has a healing effect on the body, those recovering from illness can use it as a main dietary intake.
Porridge is good for people. What about the dogs?
Porridge on its own may be easy to digest, but it may lack certain nutrients that are essential to keeping your dog healthy. To make your dog’s mash diet more balanced, it is important to include a combination of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water in a balanced diet that provides enough calories to meet their daily needs for growth, activity and repair.
My dog’s special diet
“Gula Melaka” (palm sugar) it was originally made from the sugary sap of the date palm or date palm. It is now also made from the sap of sago and coconut palms and can be sold as “coconut sugar”. Sugar is a golden brown paste sold in tubes, blocks or tins. It can be light or dark, soft and sticky or hard. As a slightly processed product of cottage industry, it varies greatly from batch to batch. In Indonesia, sugar produced from Borassus (palmyra) is known as Gula Jawa (“Javanese sugar”) or gula merah (red sugar). Sago Gula Melaka is a very popular soft dessert in Malaysia. You can see it in almost any traditional function like parties, weddings, reunions or school parties.
We never feed our dog a lot of meat. My mother will cook porridge mixed with some “gula Melaka”, “ikan bilis” (Malay word for family (Engraulidae) of small, common saltwater fish) or a small amount of beef. We usually used low quality brown rice (at the time we didn’t know it was actually organic rice and no one had heard of organic food at that time).
Avoid products that use meat offal such as bones, legs and intestines, chemical preservatives such as BHA and BHT and hard-to-digest grains such as corn, wheat, gluten and soy. These grains are sometimes listed as a protein source instead of meat in commercial dog food.
Many health problems, such as allergies that cause itchy skin, are simply caused by poor diet and improper distribution of the wrong types of food. It is recommended that you start noting the ingredients until you notice an improvement.
My dog was so used to eating porridge that he would refuse to eat if it was rice. Oatmeal smells good even to humans. This is why I believe that homemade natural food that is best for humans is guaranteed to be good for your dog.
Protect your dog’s health
Your dog’s health is very important and depends on good nutrition and plenty of exercise. A pet owner who feeds their dogs a well-balanced diet of specialty dog food will save a lot of money and have a happy, healthy pet.
If your dog has healthy skin and coat, is energetic, and gets good grades from the vet at her annual check-up, you can continue to feed her the same natural food diet regardless of which one she chooses. If a dog is having problems, it’s important to investigate whether their diet may be a contributing factor and take steps to correct things by adding a supplement, switching to a different food, or asking the vet to run some diagnostic tests.

On March 15, 2007, the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) learned that some pet foods are disgusting and killing cats and dogs. The FDA found contaminants in plant proteins imported into the United States from China and used as ingredients in pet food. The FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigation announced that two Chinese nationals and the business they operated, along with a U.S. company and its president and CEO, were indicted by a federal grand jury on February 6, 2008. The charges are for their role in a scheme for importing into the United States products they claim to be wheat gluten. The products were contaminated with melamine and used to make pet food.”
