Meta Tag Keyword Optimization – 4 Best Strategies

Meta Tag Keyword Optimization – 4 Best Strategies

The keywords tag is the least significant of the meta tags. The major search engines don’t crawl it, so it has no impact on your rankings. Many websites don’t even bother to include it, instead focusing on the title and description meta tags plus weaving their key phrases into the web copy.

So should you turn it on?

My recommendation is to include it anyway because some of the smaller search engines will still crawl it.

Here are the top 4 strategies to use:

1. Correct coding

Coding your meta tags incorrectly can prevent search engine spiders from crawling your web page. HTML errors on your website slow down the loading of your web pages. Slow loading causes customers to click away from your website.

The description tag is coded differently for HTML and XHTML.

In HTML, the meta tag does not have an end tag. i.e. >

In XHTML, the meta tag must be properly closed. i.e. />

2. Label length

Keyword meta tag should be under 800 characters. Use commas of spaces between each keyword.keywords (separated by commas, do not repeat a phrase more than 3 times)

3. Repetition of keywords

You can repeat keywords in your key phrases, but don’t repeat your key phrases more than three times. i.e. dog grooming and training, dog care, dog training. Include the keywords used in your title, description tags, and web copy. I use spaces instead of commas so that search engines can automatically pick the combinations and I don’t have to repeat keywords as often.

Instead of using commas, ie. dog grooming and training, dog care, dog training

use spaces ie dog grooming training, grooming… and you’ll use fewer words.

4. Word order

Put your most important keywords or key phrases at the beginning of your keyword meta tag.

The best investment of your time in optimizing your website is to do thorough keyword research. Keywords are what people type into search engines to find your website. If you include these keywords in your web copy and meta tags, you have a much better chance of ranking well for your website.

Keep in mind that there are other key factors to consider in order to rank well, such as plenty of relevant high-quality links pointing to your website.
