Masai Mara – the pride of Kenya and the number 1 tourist destination in Africa

Simply referred to as the Mara, which means “variegated”, a reference to the uneven landscape, the Masai Mara is the number one top destination for tourists in Africa. Managed by the local government, the Masai Mara National Reserve is located 270 kilometers from Nairobi, which is about a 4-5 hour drive. While if you are going to take charter flights, the park is 45 minutes from Wilson Nairobi Airport. The Masai Mara is also part of the Serengeti plains and is best known for the wildebeest migration and also for being home to the Big Five.

The first site of this natural speculative land is exciting with herds of elephants feeding in tree-rich pastures with a rare sighting of the evil black rhinoceros. The harbor is known to have almost the largest number of wildlife in Africa, next to the Serengeti National Park. Wildlife in this reserve can be divided into mammals, reptiles and birds. Mammals are further divided into primates, carnivores and ungulates (ungulates). Primates include monkeys, bush babies and baboons. Even- and odd-toed ungulates include; Rhinos, zebras, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, pigs and many antelopes. Carnivores in the reserve include; genets, hyenas, leopards, jackals, lions, cheetahs and the endangered wild dogs. This is the best place in Kenya to see the most sought after Big Five animals (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhinoceros). However, the name changes from five to nine to include animals such as the giraffe, zebra, cheetah and hippopotamus.

The reserve is full of animals throughout the year, despite July, August and September when the Mara is overpopulated with migrating wildebeest and moving zebras. During the same period, you can even see some rare and rarer species like the black antelope in the southwestern sector, a beautiful creature that is remarkably rare in the entire country, the bat-eared fox and the Topi, which are not found anywhere else in the country except in Tsavo National Park. The combination of picturesque landscapes, mild climate and wild nature makes the Mara Africa a top tourist destination in the interior of the country.

The most recommended and worthwhile activity in this park is the hot air balloon safari, which gives you an aerial view of the animals and you can see the real migration, which is picturesque and amazing. The hot air balloon includes a hearty breakfast and champagne after being escorted with a certificate. A truly rewarding adventure.
