Let Radiant Barrier keep your dogs warm
You may already know that a radiant barrier is a very effective way to maximize your energy dollars by keeping warm air in your home in the winter and hot air from entering your home in the summer. The magic is in the 99% aluminum foil that covers the woven polyester lining.
The radiant barrier works alongside traditional insulation in your attic to reduce drafts.
The same logic applies when the product is used elsewhere, such as in a chicken coop or doghouse. Mass-produced dog houses may be made of durable plastic, but they offer little or no protection from frigid temperatures. The animals may be out of the wind, but they have no way to keep the heat they need to keep from freezing, and they are not comfortable.
If you build your own dog house, you have the option of including some insulation – to make it airtight – and some sort of radiant barrier. When used on all four sides of a dog house, as well as on the roof, foil insulation will reflect the dog’s body heat back to the animal, acting as a heat source. If the dog house is raised off the ground (as it is in many parts of the coldest states where the snow can get high), then there is also the option of insulating the bottom of the dog house.
People can forget that their outside animals aren’t really capable of taking care of themselves. Animals rely heavily on humans to care for them and ensure they stay out of harm’s way. As committed pet owners, we must keep our commitment even when we may have grown weary of the responsibility.
