In Chicago, 2 people died of monkeypox in a few weeks

Two Chicago residents have died after contracting the monkeypox virus, the city’s health department announced. Two were diagnosed with monkeypox six weeks ago and were hospitalized.

The two had several other health conditions, including weakened immune systems, city officials said. The two deaths are not related, they said.

“While the number of new MPV cases has decreased significantly since the summer, this is a stark reminder that MPVs are dangerous and can cause serious illness, and in very rare cases, even death,” Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Alison Arwady said Friday. . “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of these individuals.”

Officials said they would not release any other information about the two cases, where they are being treated, to protect their privacy.

Deaths from monkeypox are still rare, officials said. Of the more than 75,000 cases reported in 2022, 32 deaths were reported, according to the World Health Organization.
