How to change your cat’s litter box
As an Aventura Pet Sitter and Aventura Cat sitter, I know firsthand that cats are very clean animals. They like to be groomed often and make sure their fur is “cat clean”. However, if your cat lives indoors, litter box hygiene is something he relies on you for. Follow these simple steps to ensure your cat’s litter box is clean and up to ‘feline standards’.
1. The first step is to dispose of the used cat litter as well as the litter bag.
2. Wipe down the entire litter box with disinfectant. However, be careful not to use strong cleaners like Clorox, as the smell and ingredients are very strong and can negatively affect the cat’s senses and skin. I prefer to use vinegar, which also acts as a disinfectant, but is non-toxic and the vinegar smell usually dissipates immediately.
If the litter box is very dirty, it may be preferable to rinse it thoroughly with hot soapy water and brush out all the dirt and debris before wiping it down with the disinfectant.
3. Place a new litter bag in the litter box. Make sure the corners of the bag curve over the sides of the box so you can easily grab it when it’s time to change it.
4. A quick tip is to sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the box, which will help absorb strong odors.
5. Pour fresh cat litter over the baking soda filling about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the toilet. Make sure you don’t overfill or underfill the box, as this will result in a mess of litter every time your cat goes in and out of the box, or there just isn’t enough litter, which can result in the cat’s paws getting dirty you.
6. I highly recommend using a pine litter over other types of litter as I find it masks strong odors more effectively, doesn’t produce dust that your cat inhales when they move the litter box, and lasts twice as long. -longer than other cat outfits.
7. Depending on the number of cats you have, the boxes should usually be changed every few days. The more cats, the more often it should be done.
So here it is. Follow these easy tips for a squeaky clean litter box. Your cat will appreciate it!
