Haunting Audio Reveals Spooky Sound of Earth’s Magnetic Field – ScienceAlert

European Space Agency (IS IN) this week released 5 minutes of disturbing, crackling audio, revealing what the Earth’s magnetic field sounds like.

Earth’s internal magnetism, called the magnetosphere, generates a comet-like field around the planet’s surface that provides protection from harmful solar and cosmic particle radiation, as well as atmospheric erosion by the solar wind, seconds NASA.

Researchers from the Technical University of Denmark took magnetic signals, measured by ESA Swarm satellite mission dedicated to studying the magnetic field, and turned them into sound.

The resulting in 5 minutes of audio includes strange crunches and crackles, as well as deep breathing-like sounds that listeners on social media describe as “petrifying” and “weird spine tingling.”

Since the discovery was revealed on October 24, loudspeakers in Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen, Denmark, have been blasting the recording three times a day. Plans are to continue playing every day at 8:00am, 1:00pm and 7:00pm until October 30th.

“We got access to a very interesting sound system consisting of more than 30 speakers dug into the ground in Copenhagen’s Solbjerg Square,” said musician and project supporter Klaus Nielsen of the Technical University of Denmark. he told the ESA about the live installation of the recording.

“The noise of the Earth’s magnetic field is accompanied by a representation of a geomagnetic storm which resulted from a solar flare on November 3, 2011, and actually sounds pretty scary,” Nielsen added.

Representatives for the European Space Agency and the Technical University of Denmark did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
