COVID symptoms depend on how many vaccines you’ve received, study says

If you’ve ever had COVID, there’s a chance you’re all too familiar symptoms of the viruswhich include cough, fatigue and headaches.

But as the virus has evolved and new variants such as Delta and Omicron have appeared, its most common symptoms have changed – and now, it seems, which one you get depends on how many vaccines you’ve received.

Vaccination against COVID reduces your risk serious illness, hospitalization and death if you get infected — but according to new research, it could also dictate which group of milder, more common symptoms of the virus you end up getting. It is considered that a a large proportion of cases are still asymptomatic.

In an Update In the ongoing Zoe Health Study, which has collected data from nearly 5 million participants since 2020, researchers said they identified symptoms that appeared in recent weeks, noting that they appear to vary by vaccination status.

“Overall, we saw similar symptoms of COVID-19 reported in the app by people who were and were not vaccinated,” the research team said in its update. “However, those who had already received the jab reported fewer symptoms over a shorter period of time, suggesting that they got sick more easily and got better faster.”

Symptoms according to vaccination status

The most common immediate symptoms reported in those who were fully vaccinated, ranked by prevalence, were…

  1. Sore throat
  2. Nose leak
  3. Blocked nose
  4. Persistent cough
  5. Headache

“Traditional” symptoms from the early months of the pandemic, such as loss of smell, fever and shortness of breath, ranked far down the list in those who received two doses of the vaccine, the researchers said, naming sixth, eighth, and 29th the most common symptoms of COVID.

“Interestingly, we observed that people who had been vaccinated and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 were more likely to report sneezing as a symptom compared to those who had not received the shot,” they added.

Among those who received only one dose of the vaccine, the most common recent symptoms were slightly different:

  1. Headache
  2. Nose leak
  3. Sore throat
  4. Sneezing
  5. Persistent cough

In people who had not been vaccinated, the study said, symptoms were “more recognizably of the traditional original order,” although they acknowledged that some changes had occurred since COVID first appeared.

If you haven’t received a dose of the COVID vaccine, the symptoms you’re most likely to get with the virus—according to a Zoe study—are…

  1. Headache
  2. Sore throat
  3. Nose leak
  4. Fever
  5. Persistent cough

“Loss of smell is ranked 9th, and shortness of breath is far down the list at 30th, suggesting that symptoms as previously reported change as the virus variants evolve,” the research team said.

Full vaccination and stimulation against COVID reduces the risk of serious illness from the virus, esp if you are still young and healthy.

However, the Omicron variant and its progeny are believed to—like BA.5which is currently the dominant US strain of the virus—they cause a milder disease than their predecessorseven in unvaccinated people.

Globally, COVID infections are on the rise, with experts predict there will be an increase in the number of deaths as the Northern Hemisphere enters the winter months.

In AugustDr. Anthony Fauci, the White House’s chief medical adviser, urged Americans to get vaccinated or risk “getting into trouble” during the colder seasons.
