Chihuahua – beagle mix
The Beagle Chihuahua mix, sometimes called “Cheagle”, is a very brave and dignified dog. Like a chihuahua, he believes he can handle anything and sometimes acts like he’s ready to take down a bulldog! Jealous and protective around his loved ones, he loves and demands a lot of attention. These dogs tend to be great barkers. The quality of his bark will depend on whether he has inherited a Chi bark or a Beagle bay. They are small and can be fragile like Chi or stronger. Expect them to be loving, stubborn and headstrong. Chihuahuas do not tolerate teasing, so they are not good companions for children; Beagles are calm and much more tolerant. Cheagles can inherit either trait or a mix, so it’s safe to assume they’re not suitable for children until proven otherwise.
They are usually small, though not as small as Chi, obviously. Expect the dog to grow between 9 and 20 pounds.
Like Beagles, Cheagles love daily walks and exercise and love to run. Their portable size makes them reliable travel companions. Hopefully your pet will inherit the Chihuahua’s intelligence; Beagles are extremely cute, but they have the brains of a hound, they’re all hunting and sniffing and don’t think much. If your Cheagle gets the Chi brain, she or he will be much easier to train.
Care: They need you to provide them with their basic needs, firm discipline and affection, in that order.
Ï Care for a Cheagle as you would a Chihuahua in terms of keeping him warm. Always choose quality food (read the labels, not just the brand name or price) and provide clean water. Do the vaccinations, boosters and flea and worm control. Crossbreeding usually removes the genetic weaknesses that purebreds are prone to. As both breeds show a higher than normal incidence of glaucoma, epilepsy, tracheal collapse and patellar problems, keep an eye out for them.
Ï Train them carefully, hard, early and consistently. Don’t let them develop annoying habits; they won’t understand later when people don’t want to spend time with them. Let them know what you expect and continue to enforce the rules and reward good behavior. Just like a child, a dog wants to be sure to know what is going to happen and what it should and shouldn’t do.
Ï They love love. They will burrow under the covers, sleep on your lap and follow you around the house. Do not take this pet if you are out of the house without it for 5 or 6 long days a week. They want company, attention and interaction and will find ways to entertain themselves if no one else is available to play…
Many people report that their Cheagle has the loving personality and aggressive loyalty that the breeds share. Be careful when supervising your dog, when you have guests, especially children, or when introducing other animals. Like any dog, the Cheagle is happiest when he spends a lot of time with his people.
