Chacha Choudhary, Superhero from Diamond Comics
Chacha Chaudhary is India’s most loved comic book character. When we hear or talk about him, the first thing that comes to mind is his red turban, his wooden stick, his big white moustache, his wife Beanie, his faithful dog Rocket and Sabu who is an alien from the planet Jupiter. Sabu arrived on earth with Chacha on one of his travels. Chacha treats him like his nephew, his power is useful to defeat the bad guys. While Chacha’s mind is his most powerful weapon, proven to work faster than a computer. Chachaji is presented as a middle-class old man. Physically he is not strong but his strength is in his brain. He differs from other superheroes, be they Indians or foreigners, in the fact that he does not have a single superpower, except of course his mind. Chachaji has solved thousands of cases so far.
His family includes his wife Binny, known simply as Chachi (Hindi for aunt), his pet dog Rocket, and the giant Sabu of the Jupiter plane. Sabu decided to stay permanently on Earth after tasting delicious food made by Chachi’s hands. When the need arises, Sabu helps Chacha Ji with his physical strength. According to the comics, when Sabu gets angry, a volcano erupts somewhere (this is indicated in a panel with a picture of an erupting volcano that reads: “When Sabu is angry, a volcano erupts.”). Whenever he performs an action of great strength, he lets out the cry “Hoo-Huba!” Sabu eats 108 chapatis, 12 kilograms of halwa and around 20 liters of lassi in one meal. He is not married and avoids the subject.
Chacha Chaudhary’s greatest enemy is Raaka (once a dacoit but an immortal giant who became invincible after drinking a magical potion made by Chakram Acharya).
Many times Chacha Chaudhary has beaten Raaka and forced him to shave off his mustache as a result of some competition that Chacha won. Chacha’s Raaka comic, Raaka ki waapsi (Return of Raaka) is one of the best sellers. In the previous comics, Raaka was the same size as Sabu, but then Raaka was put to sleep by some potion given by a Himalayan saint and buried in the ocean for the first time. On his return with another potion he was reduced to a small size, sealed in a bottle and buried in a grave. But that wasn’t the end. He returns several times again to wreak havoc on the city. Finally, Chacha Chaudhary and Sabu buried him in an endless hole somewhere near a missile launch pad.
Currently, Diamond Comics are the biggest publishers of Chacha Chaudhary. One of Diamond Comics’ press releases stated that Indian children in the age group of 10-13 years ranked Chacha Chaudhary as their most popular comic book character. It should be noted that not only children but also adults like Diamond comics, especially Chacha Chaudhary. Diamond Comics has been published in almost all Indian regional languages and has reached a large audience that has become fans from all over the world.
