Cardigan Welsh Corgi – dog breeds

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a small, generally cute breed of dog, weighing an average of 30 to 38 pounds (13 to 17 kg) and standing about 10 to 12 inches (26 to 31 cm) tall. It is one breed of two famous dog breeds within the Welsh Corgis group that originated in Wales, Cardiganshire to be exact (as the name suggests), and is also one of the oldest herding breeds. It is a very small dog, very short, with erect ears, a long tail and an even longer body. The old American Kennel Club called it the short-legged Alsatian. Primary coat colors include brindle, black, red, fawn, sable and blue merle, usually along with white markings. They do not shed much hair and do not require much care. They are said to be descended from the Teckel family, also known as the dachshund, and have existed in Wales for over 3,000 years. The Cardigan Welsh breed was first registered with the AKC in 1935.

Cardigan Welsh is a very affectionate dog and fits into the family. The occupation for which it was bred, namely herding livestock and hunting smaller animals, is something the animal does not easily forget and has a tendency to bite people and circle around them to keep them in place, sometimes it can chases after people who move fast or smaller animals that run away, but is generally not very aggressive at all. They also like to bark and are very alert, so they make very good guard dogs.

The Welsh Corgi has a general life expectancy of 12 to 15 years and the most common health problems include thyroid problems, spinal problems, HD, PRA and obesity. They are generally a healthy breed as long as they get their daily dose of exercise. It is also good to note that the parents of a Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppy must have both OFA and CERF certificates. The Cardigan Welsh breed is very intelligent, eager and responsive and should not present any training problems. Training him to get rid of his tendency to bite is also not impossible and is suitable for both experienced and inexperienced dog owners. They have a lot of energy and need a regular daily dose of activity to stay healthy. They are reserved and polite to strangers and can get along well with other pets if they are used to them.
