Car Etiquette – Tips for placing a woman and a couple in a car
The rules of etiquette regarding sitting in a car on social occasions are different than sitting in a business situation. The social rules of car travel are especially important when a man opens the door for a woman and when couples are sitting in a car. Intelligent people who want to climb the ladder of success know the rules and carefully follow them.
In social situations, good manners require a well-mannered man to help a lady into the car from the curb side before going around the car to get inside. Ladies, everyone knows you can open your own doors, but some of you are missing the point. Before 17:00 you can be a lioness in the office. After 5:00 p.m., though, it’s good to lighten up, turn into a kitten, and stop robbing your man of his manhood. People, don’t be ignorant! Being attentive is a subtlety that a classy woman does not miss. Even a simple gesture like opening the car door for her sends the message that you think she deserves to be treated like a princess and are proud to be seen with her. If you must, fake it until it becomes part of you.
How couples are accommodated when traveling together is an indicator of their social class. When two working-class men and two women travel together, the two men sit in the front seats of the car and the women take the back seats. In the middle class, one couple sits in the front and the other couple sits in the back. Upper class people choose a different placement. The woman from one pair sits in the front with the male driver of the other pair, while her companion sits with the driver’s partner in the back seat. The man in the back seat defers to the woman, giving her the place of honor — in the back on the passenger side. This seating arrangement is supposed to be a couple spending a lot of time talking to each other. The mixed seating arrangement encourages cross-talk, thus fulfilling the purpose of being with others – exchanging sparkling conversation, news and ideas with everyone.
Does this all sound a little pretentious? Perhaps, but if you are interested in joining the social club, you must adapt your behavior and thinking to the rules of acceptable behavior in the car, as in all areas of etiquette.
