Canon Pixma IP1900 – Cheap starter printer

One of Canon’s latest printers in the entry-level segment is the Pixma iP1900, which has recently attracted too much attention for its pricing. When it was launched last year it was priced at nearly £80, but Canon is now offering the same printer on its website for under £25, a 70% discount off the original price.

Being an inexpensive printer, it is aimed at homes and offers the best resolution of 4800 X 1200 dpi. Its ink droplet size is 2 pl, which is double that of the latest Canon photo printers. The Pixma iP1900 works with Canon’s patented ChromaLife100 system, which is almost equivalent to lab-quality printing.

Unlike most of its photo printers, Canon uses a two-cartridge system on this one. In addition to the black cartridge, cyan, magenta, yellow and photo black and packed in one cartridge.

Print speed is decent at 13 pages per minute for monochrome prints in normal mode, while color prints are rated at 8 pages per minute in the same mode. The printer takes close to a minute to spit out 4″ X 6″ borderless photos.

For an entry-level printer, the connectivity option is basic with a USB port and is perfectly acceptable. But the lack of a PictBridge port and memory card readers makes it a one-dimensional printer that doesn’t give users the choices they might need. Being a sub-£25 printer, the lack of basic features is still not a big concern. With a two-cartridge system, the cost per print will be high and can work against the printer.
