Building a List of Search Engine Traffic II
On page optimization for search engines is basically the process of doing specific things on your website to allow search engines to understand what your website is about.
On-page optimization itself is not critical to the ranking process itself, although without on-page optimization a search engine would have a hard time knowing your site exists or what it’s about, so it’s crucial to your ranking.
So what are the main means of on-page optimization for search engines?
There are a few different areas where you want your keywords to appear, namely in your title, description, keywords, content, title, and other source code tags.
I will now go through each of these elements one by one:
Your keyword or key phrase must appear in your title. This keyword or keyword phrase should also be placed at the beginning of your title and should not be accompanied by many other words. If the keyword can be used twice, that’s fine too, but you don’t want to repeat it more than twice or in an unreasonable way.
The reason you want to try to limit the number of additional words you use is that the title can be ranked by the percentage of keyword usage, so any additional words reduce the impact of the keyword.
So take the keyword phrase “puppy training” as an example
An example of a good title would be “Puppy Training – How to Train Your Puppy”
A bad example might be “How to Train Your Puppy Most Effectively”
Notice how in the last example there are a number of useless words (to search engines, anyway) and the keyword comes later in the title. Also, the key phrase itself is not even used – only the keywords that make up the key phrase.
