Beagle rescue dogs deserve a second chance
You’ve seen the news reports and the horror stories about the horrible conditions dogs are subjected to in puppy mills. You may also know that puppy mill puppies supplies all pet stores that sell puppies – NO EXCEPTIONS. You’re ready to bring a dog into your home, but you can’t get a cute puppy with the mind of a blank slate to fill out the instructions. You have decided to adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue service. It saves a life and helps a charity you care about.
Because of their many wonderful pet qualities, you have decided to adopt a beagle or beagle-mix. Beagles are often recommended by dog books, trainers, veterinarians and the American Kennel Club as a great “beginner” family dog. But can a Beagle rescue dog be just as good a pet as the one you raised from a puppy? You bet your dog biscuits can!
A good beagle rescue center will give you detailed information about your rescue beagle’s history, medical condition and any behavioral quirks. You will also need to provide a lot of information about the Beagle yourself – including a home inspection and a personal reference. The bad thing is that pet stores and internet sites that sell puppies never do these thorough checks, otherwise there would be a lot less need for dog shelters.
You will never be able to just drive to a beagle rescue or foster home and immediately drive off with the dog. And if it happens, run very far! There is something really suspicious! You’ll feel like you’re going through a college course on Beagle Information 101. This is to make absolutely sure that you and your dog are an adequate match and will stay together. The center hopes the dog will not be returned.
All Beagle rescue dogs are individual. There will always be someone who hasn’t read the Official Beagle Information Guide. But beagles are very trainable and will move mountains for food. There is no problem with a Beagle rescue dog that cannot be cured. Beagles are not known for being mean to people or other dogs. Your Beagle rescue center will be happy to help you with any problems. Just ask them.
The most common problems in Beagle rescue dogs are overeating, tearing through trash for food, wandering, and separation anxiety. Since beagles are small, you should be able to easily keep food out of reach and spray the litter box with bitter apple (used to discourage chewing). Never leave your beagle unattended in the yard. Combined with regular exercise, this should cure the wandering. Leave your dog in the same room when you’re gone with a shirt you’ve recently worn to ease separation anxiety. This is a more complex problem, but treatable.
