Are Yorkshire Terrier Puppies Declining In Popularity?
The American Kennel Club has released its list of the most popular dogs of 2009. It may come as no surprise that the Labrador Retriever topped the list for the 19th year in a row. What may come as a surprise to us Yorkie puppy lovers is that the Yorkshire Terrier has been pushed to the number 3 position by the German Shepherd.
Before all of us toy breed lovers go on a rampage, there is good news. Yorkshire terrier puppies are the most popular breed in the toy group – no small feat to overcome! For at least the past 3 years, Yorkies have been ranked second, giving them the second most popular dog title in quite some time. What happened in 2009, people?
The AKC derives their numbers from the number of dogs of a particular breed that are registered through their organization. Maybe some of us Yorkie puppy owners haven’t registered our puppy yet? Really, it’s not that big of a deal. But if you’re a competitive person and want to see your beloved furry breed back to the place it deserves, fill out and submit these documents!
On the other hand, the top ten dogs were split directly in half between large breeds and toy breeds, which seems to say that our little pups are giving the big ones a run for their money!
As Yorkshire Terrier puppy lovers, we simply cannot believe that one of our favorite breeds has fallen in popularity. We are sure there is a reasonable explanation and plans to make 2010 a successful year for this little breed!
