Another six people diagnosed with monkeypox died

Six people died in four states from the monkey pox over the past week, according to health agencies.

As the United States continues to fight and protect against monkeypox, more individuals are dying from the viral disease, according to reports from state health departments and center for disease control and prevention.

Since last week, two people from Chicago have died in Illinois, two in New York state, one in Nevada and one in Maryland from monkeypox. The deaths in Chicago were reported Friday, and both people had other health problems, such as weakened immune systems.

Across the United States, the CDC has recorded more than 27,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox. Moreover, patients in New York had previous medical conditions that contributed to their death.

“Monkey pox is still circulating in humans and can cause severe illness and death,” Dr. Jinlene Chan, Maryland’s deputy secretary of public health, said in a statement to UPI.

“If you meet the conditions, for example if you are immunocompromised or at risk, the best way to protect yourself from serious illness caused by MPX is to get vaccinated,” she added.

The Nevada patient was reported to be a man over 50 years of age and also diagnosed with the underlying conditions at the time of his death.

The first U.S. death from monkeypox occurred in Los Angeles County in September after a person was hospitalized while also being “severely immunocompromised.”
