Most people have probably heard of exercise-induced asthma, which occurs during bouts of physical activity, but another chronic variety of the condition is allergic asthma.
So what is it really?
Asthma itself is a disease that manifests itself in the lungs and airways. When a person has an asthma attack, their airways constrict, restricting airflow.
The lungs work harder to try to produce more air for the body, but it cannot be processed through the airways.
There are some schools of thought that asthma is a condition that can be inherited.
This disease often runs in families, so scientists believe there must be a genetic link to the disease. The condition can sometimes be such that the child will grow into adulthood, but this does not always happen.
Allergy-induced asthma is a form of the condition that is triggered by a person’s allergies.
As with exercise-induced asthma, the trigger is exercise, so with allergic asthma, the trigger is allergies. When a trigger is introduced into the body, the body’s response is to have an asthma attack.
Finding what triggers these attacks is the most important component of patient care.
Allergic asthma can be very serious and the patient should be aware of what allergies they may have in order to avoid these triggers.
When a patient has allergic asthma, they need to get tested to find out exactly what they are allergic to. Triggers can be identified through testing and can be any number and variety of external substances.
It is more likely that the patient will be advised by his doctor to take the test to determine exactly which allergies are affecting him. This testing can take a full day’s effort, but it’s worth it.
The patient is scraped with a small needle that contains specific substances. These can be animal dander, pollen, weeds, dust, mold or even foods can be used. The patient then waits to see if there is a physical reaction.
The test is performed by dividing the patients back into a grid and then scraping small areas from the back. The doctor then assesses whether there has been a reaction or not.
Once it is determined what the patient is allergic to, further treatment will be suggested. When someone has allergic asthma and discovers they are allergic to say cats, they know to avoid cats and this will help prevent further asthma attacks.
The condition can be controlled with various medications and the patient should take care of their health by following the doctor’s instructions.
