A tree, a wonderful creation of nature
The tree is a perennial plant that can grow to a height of 379 feet. When there is sunlight, they tower over other plants. They usually have broad leaves and strong trunks that are often used for timber. They have been there on earth for the past 370 million years. They are so versatile that they grow in areas spanning from the Arctic to the equator.
Trees are important creations of nature. They provide shelter and food. They also store huge amounts of carbon dioxide in their tissues. Rainforests help different trees and creatures to live and grow together. Various other living things live on their leaves, trunks, under the bark and branches. Therefore, trees have a very high value when it comes to biodiversity.
Most often, trees also have an economic value. Their fruits are valuable as food for humans and animals. Wood is used to make furniture and house structures etc. But cutting down forests for cultivation and timber extraction is not good for the environment. The absorption of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen is one of the most important functions of trees. In the process, they make food. For all these reasons, trees are sacred to some societies.
A tree’s root system is what keeps the tree firmly anchored to the soil. At the same time, it absorbs water and nutrients from the soil. The main root is the one that enters the soil vertically. Lateral roots branching from it go horizontally in search of water and nutrients. Roots have root hairs with which they absorb nutrients.
It is the trunk of a tree that allows it to stand above the others so that sunlight can fall on its leaves. It also fulfills the secondary purpose of transporting water and nutrients to the upper parts. The outermost layer of the trunk is the bark, which is made up of dead cells. Its purpose is to provide protection to the inner layers of the trunk.
The middle part of the trunk is called xylem, which transports water and nutrients to the leaves of the tree. Chlorophyll, found in leaves, uses these nutrients and the energy supplied by sunlight to synthesize carbohydrates, which are the food for other areas. This food is transported through the phloem. Phloem is the layer in the stem that lies between the bark and the xylem.
